Ortholexis Karsch 1895

the Scarce Sprites

Andrew V. Z. Brower
Containing group: Celaenorrhinini

Introduction

The scarce sprites, a small genus of rare West African forest skippers.

Nomenclature

Larsen (2005) elevated the three species in this genus from Katreus Watson and placed them in Loxolexis Karsch. However, the type of Loxolexis is Loxolexis percnaptera Karsch, which is a junior subjective synonym of the type species of Katreus, Astictopterus johnstonii Butler. Therefore, Loxolexis is a synonym of Katreus, and these species are assigned to Ortholexis, the type species of which is O. melichroptera (a synonym of O. holocausta (Mabille)).

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
