Introduction

The palmflies are a widespread group ranging from India (or West Africa, if Elymniopsis is included) to the Solomon Islands. Many species are Batesian mimics of danaines and other unpalatable taxa, some with sexually dimorphic forms that mimic different species. As the common name suggests, the larvae feed on, and can at times be pests of, palms.

Nomenclature

The type species of the genus, Elymnias jynx Hübner, 1818 was selected by Hemming in 1943. It is currently viewed as a junior subjective synonym of E. hypermnestra (L., 1763).

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
