Echinozoon Garnham, 1951; monotypic

Type species Echinozoon hoogstraali Garnham, 1951

Trophozoites multiply by binary fission in host erythrocytes forming typical pairs (as in the genus Babesia). Older parasites form genus specific filaments present on parasitized erythrocytes. Only one species is described from mammals – namely from the rock hyrax (Heterohyrax syriacus and H. brucei). The vector is unknown, but the role of ticks such as Haemophysalis has been discussed.
